PEMPL Solar Mesh

The versatility, strength, and pattern uniformity of expanded metal allows its use for different applications. An emerging use is for solar panels and to meet the increasing demand, PEMPL manufactures expanded metals that are engineered to offer decorative and protective solutions.

The purposes of expanded metal are to conceal, filter, enclose and protect, and with the number of solar panel installations continuing to rise, an overlooked aspect of rooftop arrays is the space under the panels. This space provides safety for birds from predators and extreme weather. Pigeons create a mess of feathers, droppings, and nesting materials. Expensive to clean and if allowed to accumulate, it may allow rainwater to pool which can lead to damage to the roof.

Rats and squirrels prefer to gnaw on wiring. Compromised wiring can short circuit the panel or the entire array, and if it comes in contact with nests or windblown debris such as leaves or pine needles, it can pose a fire risk. Homeowners may also discover that their HOA deems this space unsightly thus be skirted while meeting architectural requirements.

Commercial ground-mounted arrays are lower to the ground making their wiring and equipment susceptible to theft and vandalism. The back of the entire array does not need to be skirted, only the sections that will protect the wiring and equipment.

PEMPL manufacturers over 60 expanded metal patterns. To provide effective protection and ventilation for solar panel arrays, all dimensions are customizable: The holes are typically between one-half to 1-inch, 48-inch lengths for sheets or 25-feet for coils, and widths of 4, 6, 8, or 12 inches. Paint or powder coat can be applied to match the panel edge or meet HOA requirements, and decorative expanded metal patterns can further accentuate architectural elements.
